Short-Radius Operation Cases

Short radius technology is a drilling technique that has been developed based on medium-to-long radius horizontal well technology. This technology can significantly increase oil well production recovery and rates, optimize well pattern layout, and effectively develop various types of reservoirs. It not only helps to save drilling and overall oilfield development costs but also, especially for thin oil and gas layers that are difficult to develop, greatly improves recovery rates and economic benefits. Wells with a curvature radius of less than 12 meters are typically referred to as ultra-short radius wells.

In 2022, our company undertook a window-opening short radius integrated operation  well project. The designed well depth was 1695.57 meters, with the window-opening point at 1507.30 meters, and the designed maximum dogleg severity was 35.38°/30m.

1. The high dogleg severity of short-radius horizontal wells makes it difficult for conventional instruments to pass through the downhole drill string. A small-sized, flexible connected inclinometer must be used. In this well, the LHE615601 type Short-Radius MWD (Measure-While-Drilling) inclinometer, which was independently developed by our company, was utilized.



 


2. The dogleg severity of short-radius horizontal wells is very high, and special-structured downhole motors are required to meet the design specifications. In this well, a 2° single-bend motor with a knuckle joint was used in the build-up section.

 

BHA (Bottom Hole Assembly):

PDC Bit (114 mm)+Motor (2°; 89 mm)+Titanium Alloy Drill Pipe (89 mm)+Sub (89 mm)+Adapter (PH6×NC31)+Drill Pipe (89 mm)


 


3. During the drilling of the horizontal section, a combination of low-angle mud motor + MWD (Measurement While Drilling) + non-magnetic titanium alloy drill pipe was used. Based on the real-time MWD monitoring information, the drilling azimuth and inclination were adjusted in a timely manner to ensure that the horizontal drilling length in the target direction met the design requirements.

Construction Summary:

The operation interval of this well was from 1517m to 1696m, with a landing depth of 1589m.The horizontal section length was 107.00m. Sandstone was encountered over the entire horizontal section, with a total length of 107.00m, resulting in a sandstone encounter rate of 100.00%. Oil-bearing sandstone was also encountered over the entire length of 107.00m, including 16.00m of oil-stained siltstone and 91.00m of oil-soaked sandstone, achieving an oil-bearing sandstone encounter rate of 100.00%.
